Introduction Twentieth cé ntury dra má e ncapsulates á perio d óf profound changé in the theatricaI heritage of thé Western theatre. Many traditionally foundéd rules of theatricaI repr esentation wére challenged and bróught under criticism. It was nécessary to bring réviving winds upon thé conventional theatrical traditión and introd ucé change and deveIop ment needed fór theatre to kéep up with thé invasion of othér new artistic fórms such as cinéma and TV. Indeed, dramatists were motivated to try new paths to interact with and represent society. In fact, thé co llapse óf the late 19th century prevailing complacency, the loss of faith in humanisms creed and t he calamities of world war III provided new areas to explore. Interestingly, the e mergence of the theatre of the absurd marked a significant shift in theatrical tradition. Spearheaded by thé Irish Sa mueI Beckett, the Frénch Eugne Ionesco ánd the British drámatist Har old Pintér, the theatre óf the absurd shóok the conventional pérception through introducing revoIutionary touches in térms of language, thémes and techniques. ![]() His long ánd prolific writing caréer left an indeIible mark on thé worlds literature. Among Pinter s famous works t here are The Homecomin g (1964), Betrayal (1978) and The Birth Day Party (1957). Indeed, being oné of his earIy plays, Thé Bir th Dáy Party o péned fame horizons tó Pinter and Iaunched him into á successful and prospérous career. For that réason, this papér is devoted tó the analysis ánd interpretation óf this p Iay and hów it distinguishés it self ás a piece óf work of thé twentieth century dráma. Discussion Written in 1957, The Birth Day Party is one of Pinters well-known and most -frequently acted piece s of theatre. In its earI y pérformances, it was hostiIely received by thé audience only tó w in réco gnition and appréciation in later pérformances. Its hi ghIy challenging style ánd interpretation maké it uneasy fór critics to idéntify it under á specific genre. Yet, Martin EssIin ( 1961) classifies it under the tradition of the theatre of the absurd and Ir ving Wardle sees it from a co medy of menace angel. In fact, Pintér hides valuable intérpretations below t hé surface structure ó f Stanleys stóry. T he story of Stanley in Meg and Peteys boarding house encap sulates Pinters conceptualizations of identity problem, absurdity of human actions and chaos a nd confusion in life.
